Survey meters are one of the first lines of defense in radiation safety and play a critical role in radiation safety. Routine calibration of these sensitive instruments is not only required for compliance, it is essential for peace-of-mind.
At West Physics, we understand how vital it is that your survey meters perform as intended every time you use them. That’s why we’ve developed a comprehensive, expert-led Survey Meter Calibration Service to help your facility maintain compliance, reduce operational disruptions, and build confidence in your safety program.
Every facility with radiation survey meters must ensure compliance through regular calibration. While compliance is key, we’ve found that clients need more than just technical competence from their calibration provider.
If you operate radiation survey meters, you need:
A structured calibration program transforms calibration from a compliance burden into a strategic asset that protects your staff, patients, and reputation.
Downtime During Calibration Cycles
Facilities can often lose access to critical meters for long periods of time, impacting operations. Our service offers fast and predictable turnaround times to minimize downtime.
Missing Documentation During Inspections
Scrambling to find calibration certificates is stressful and risky during audits. We provide organized, digital documentation that is audit-ready and easy to retrieve by serial number and calibration date.
Lack of Ongoing Accuracy Checks
Meters can fail or drift out of calibration between annual checks. We guide your team in setting up monthly constancy checks to maintain operational reliability.
Fast, Efficient Turnaround
24-hour turnaround time after we have received your survey meter at our Atlanta calibration lab.
Expert-Led Calibration
Your calibration is performed by experienced medical and health physicists who understand radiation safety and regulatory compliance, ensuring precise results and peace of mind.
Digital Documentation for Compliance
We provide clear, organized digital and paper certificates for every calibration, simplifying audit readiness and record-keeping.
Support Beyond Calibration
We help you develop an effective rotation schedule, identify when meters should be replaced rather than recalibrated, and establish a constancy check program to keep your team protected year-round.
Our Survey Meter Calibration Service supports:
Hospitals and Health Systems – Nuclear medicine, fluoroscopy, and radiography operations.
Freestanding Imaging Centers – Including outpatient facilities and mobile imaging providers.
Industrial Facilities – Supporting industrial radiography and NDT programs requiring precise dose rate measurements.
Academic and Other Facilities – other customers using portable gamma/beta survey meters.
With over 20 years in medical and health physics, we understand the unique operational challenges you face in maintaining compliance while delivering patient care and operational excellence. We are committed to being more than a vendor—we are your trusted partner in radiation safety.
We have helped hundreds of facilities nationwide:
Survey meter calibration is the process of adjusting and verifying the accuracy of radiation detection instruments (like Geiger counters or ionization chambers) to ensure they provide reliable and precise measurements.
Calibration ensures your device provides accurate radiation readings, maintains compliance with safety standards, and meets regulatory requirements for workplace and environmental monitoring.
Most manufacturers and regulatory bodies recommend calibration annually, but high-usage or critical-use instruments may require more frequent calibration.
We calibrate Geiger-Mueller (GM) survey meters, ion chamber survey meters, and, depending on the setup, scintillation detectors. This includes handheld instruments designed to detect beta and gamma radiation. We do not currently calibrate meters which detect exclusively alpha or neutron radiation. We calibrate both analog and digital models from major manufacturers (such as Ludlum and Fluke), ensuring that each device meets regulatory standards and performs with precision in the environments where accurate radiation measurement is critical—such as nuclear medicine departments, PET/CT, radiation therapy departments, industrial settings, academic institutions, research facilities, and emergency response. Our calibration process includes a full performance check to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability in the field. Please don’t hesitate to email, call or fill out our web contact form to check if we calibrate your specific meter type!
Yes, every calibration includes a calibration certificate with calibration data (including efficiencies and cpm-to-dpm conversions), in compliance with national and international standards (e.g., NIST, ISO).
The calibration process itself takes around 15-30 minutes depending on the meter and/or probe. We can calibrate the meter and/or probe within 24 hours of receiving it in our calibration lab.
The meter should be shipped to West Physics via ground shipping in a secure container with appropriate packaging material to prevent damage during shipment. Once we calibrate your meter and/or probe, it will be shipped back to you in a West Physics branded box, which includes packaging, the calibration certificate, and a note requesting that you keep the box for shipment back to Atlanta in the future. When the meter and/or probe is due for calibration the following year, you will receive an email notification 60 days prior to the calibration due date. Once you approve the calibration, a shipping label will be sent via email to the contact on file. You will then ship the meter back to the West Physics calibration lab using the original West Physics box and packaging material.
Prices vary based on the instrument type and required services. Contact us for a custom quote.
If your instrument fails calibration, we’ll notify you immediately with a detailed report. You can choose to repair, recalibrate, or replace the device depending on the issue.
Yes, we provide order tracking and regular updates via email or through our customer portal, so you can monitor the status of your instrument throughout the process.
